Antigua

Another day of sunshine and sightseeing. Nelson’s Dockyard as in Horatio Nelson was the destination today. Along the way, we stopped at a few view points to enjoy the view and see first hand how special English Harbor is.

Nelson’s Dockyard is now a national park, but boats still dock there. Most of the buildings go back to Nelson’s time, the late 1700’s. The harbor is very protected with one narrow opening to a harbor with room for many, many warships. This was where the fleet came for repairs. It was not a good place to be stationed as most who came here, died here from disease or lead poisoning (rum and beer was stored in lead lined casks.

With tourism the most important industry on the island, a culture of polite, helpful folk is the way here. We have wandered about, asked directions about a thousand times, and made to feel so very welcome.

The focus of life here and on the other island stops seems more family oriented, church going (most everything is closed on Sunday) and laid back. Not a bad place to be.
