Saturday afternoon of another week without spending any money. Money we didn’t spend – I prepared our income tax return (would much rather let someone else do it) and Paul painted the bathroom on the main floor.
Last weekend we were in Silverton for a St. Patrick’s Day Rally. We had a wonderful time visiting with our Airstream friends, catching up on what they did over the winter and travel plans for this year. With almost 30 trailers and about 60 folks, you couldn’t miss our group. Susan and Brad were perfect rally hosts. Doug and Mona made sure we didn’t run out of bananas. And Kim and Harold tried to put our AAA membership to good use when they locked themselves out of their trailer. The lock on the Airstream was too much for the locksmith – he couldn’t get it open. An old fashioned “slim Jim” on the window did the trick.
KATU was out here Monday to see how we are doing. Shellie Bailey-Shah was most interested in our home cooking, whether we have cheated (we haven’t), what is hardest for us (not eating out) and plans for our Frugal Living Party tonight. We still don’t know when the segment will air on Channel 2.
While we are cooking more than we have in recent months, we are still getting a few meals out. Wednesday was dinner with Gretchen and her family to celebrate Dylan’s 6th birthday. Gretchen prepared a great chicken and biscuit dish in the crockpot. Thursday we ate dinner at our friend Charley’s. She makes an outstanding Bolognese. For our home cooking, I find I am using tried and true recipes rather than looking through the cookbooks for something new and different. We have most of the ingredients for the old stand by recipes and experience makes them easier to modify if we are short of something.
The banana nymph struck again. Wednesday morning in addition to finding the newspaper on the front porch, there was an offering from the banana nymph. This time we were given 2 tomatoes, 2 avocados and a lime. Paul made us a wonderful guacamole. Thanks banana nymph.
So far it looks like the food will hold out pretty well until the end of the challenge in two weeks. At least as far as what is in the freezer and pantry. Fresh fruits and vegetables are starting to run low and lack in variety. With careful planning we are wasting very little. And are looking forward to going to the grocery store next month.
Now to enjoy the sunshine – and it is free!
