Warnemunde is a seaside town on the Baltic Sea. Originally a small fishing village, during the 1800’s, the town began to remake itself as a sea resort. Today the beach, restaurants, tour boats and regional specialities are the primary attraction. The fish market with both smoked and fresh fish made me wish we were staying in a self-catering apartment for a few days.
With temperatures nearing 75, this is the best weather we’ve had since Bermuda. It was a treat to walk around without a coat, eat at an outdoor cafe and soak up a few rays by the pool when we returned to the ship after our visit to town.
After two days at sea, it felt so good to walk around for hours. Much of the town is narrow cobblestone streets, lined with quaint houses and business buildings. The warm weather brought the tourists out, so town was a bit crowded. However, if you wandered away from the heart of the area catering to tourists, the tree lined streets and parks made for a peaceful outing.
At the beach, you could rent a beach chair, big enough for two. High season pricing, 2.50 Euros for an hour, 10 Euros bought you a full day. After 2 pm, the price dropped to 6.50 Euros. Your own spot for a week would run you 60.00 Euros, or 7 days for the price of 6. The chairs are arranged in tidy rows, each row numbered as is each chair.
Prices for lunch were on the high side, with most restaurants listing entrees at 12 to 15 Euros. A Euro is 1.4 US dollars, so lunches were about $17 to $20 without a beverage. Ice cream was more reasonably priced at .80 Euro or a little over a dollar for one scoop. Continuing on the cost of visiting the sea shore, the public toilets cost .60 Euro.
Next stop, Helsinki.
